Day 5 - Chickasha OK

Miles today: 424

Miles total: 1704

Rode AR-7 and AR-10 into Oklahoma ... OK but not great roads, nothing special.

First stop was the American Pigeon Museum.

Learned that 1) homing pigeons have successfully returned after traveling over 1000 miles, 2) that Reuters original business used pigeons to send news, and 3) pigeon racing is banned in Chicago. Out back they have a pigeon roost with some interesting breeds.  I liked the spats on this one:

Next was the State Capitol

Yes that’s a functioning oil well right in front.  The Capitol sits on an oil field.

Last stop was the Oklahoma City National Memorial.  Should have spent more time there; if there’s one thing Americans are good at it’s building memorials to disasters and tragedies.  The museum was outstanding.  Among other things they have a lot of the forensic evidence used in the initial investigation, like the infamous rear axle and wheel from the Ryder truck

The “Survivor Tree” is amazing.  This elm tree was nearly destroyed by the blast but somehow survived.  You can’t really see it in the photo but the trunk is still charred.
