Rode west on US80 in Louisiana (“historic” RT 80, according to the road signs) to Monroe. Stopped at a Waffle House, then continued northwest on LA-143 and LA-2, crossing into Arkansas and picking up AR-7. All very good roads with little traffic. First stop was Spudnuts in El Dorado (found it on Atlas Obscura ... look it up).
After my spudnut I continued on to Little Rock. Was going to have the fried catfish at the Lassis Inn (recommend by Food & Wine) but the spudnut/Waffle House base left no room for lunch. Next stop was the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site.
And then the State Capitol. Certainly one of the nicer examples of a neo-classical State Capitol building.
Check out the 4-inch thick bronze main doors, hand polished every week.
I also came across this ... what the ...?
Finally ended in Hot Springs, a nice resort town with many well-preserved early 20th century buildings and a historic Bathhouse Row. Worth revisiting the next time I’m riding in the Ozarks/Ouachitas.
Have to say: you do your homework! The food sounds amazing - especially at Spudnuts.
ReplyDeleteLove the azure blue skies you are experiencing, too. Makes the fascinating architecture you’ve photographed shine.
Still pondering how the Mississippi River moved south like that. Must have been SOME storm(s)....
What, pray tell, is a spudnut?
DeleteNow I know what to get you for your 60th: a state capitol! (But not Mississippi’s)
ReplyDeleteThat’s a high school??? It’s beautiful!
